Do we REALLY need a road map to birth “well”? roadmap

Short answer to a complicated issue….yes yes yes!

Why?

Women are often told it doesn’t matter how the birth went as long as baby is healthy.

I’m calling BS to that babe! It’s not only not true, it’s downright insulting, dismissive and hurtful.

Birth Matters.

We know that up to 35% of women would describe their birth as traumatic. We know that there are many women that emerge from birth feeling disappointed or disempowered. We know a traumatic birth can impact how women view themselves and how they judge themselves as mothers. We know that it can influence a woman’s decision to have more children. We know that trauma contributes to perinatal mood disorders such as anxiety and depression.

We also know that in general birth is feared in our culture, it is viewed as an event in which something will go wrong. We also believe culturally that women can’t birth without intervention of some description. And the stats tell us that women birthing in hospital in Australia are more likely to have some form of intervention than not.

What do these beliefs and practices do to our feelings of empowerment and confidence in our bodies?

What do they do to the likelihood of being able to “birth well” whatever that looks like?

Let’s take a look at these things and also my “Big 4 to birthing well”, a roadmap of sorts that I think every woman deserves.
